Looks Like Omega Changed Their Stance On The Speedmaster 125

Posted by

Back in May, I laid out my case for my belief that Omega made far more than 2,000 Speedmaster 125s in a post titled: Speedmaster 125: The Unanswered Questions. If you haven’t read that post, it is a lengthy collection of all the information I’ve observed on this reference, which until this month Omega has cited as a limited edition of only 2,000 pieces.

That May post included the photo at the top of this page of my own Speedmaster 125 on the Extract of the Archives that Omega sent to me in February 2016. The Extract includes the text:

Special edition of 2’000 examples made to commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the foundation of the Louis Brandts’ “comptior” in 1848.

I agree with that language except for the words of 2’000 examples.

Flash forward ahead a few months to this past weekend, when I saw a Speedmaster 125 listed for sale on eBay. Not an uncommon occurrence, which is part of the reason I feel 2,000 is impossibly low. This listing had a picture of the Extract the seller had recently received. Most interesting to me is that text at the bottom, which is slightly different than the text on my Extract from a year and a half ago. Here are the two Extracts side by side:

Left is my Extract, created in 2016, on the right is the Extract from eBay seller sparc1982, created in August 2017.

The new one, dated August 7, 2017, is missing the reference to the production total. This is a minor tweak to a document that is only interesting to a few hardcore collectors, but to me this is BIG news. Omega just might be listening to me.

If so I’d love for them to clarify more of the unanswered questions surrounding this piece, such as the meaning of those alphanumeric codes that appear on some Speedy 125s. Also if anyone at Omega is reading, the recent Extract contains a slight typo: I believe the word “of” should be added after the word “foundation”.

  2. Hello!!
Does the correct movement always engravings on the chronograph bridge (including serial number) and rotor without serial or can be posible an authentic 125 movement with serial movement engraving on the rotor?

    Thank you!

    1. I believe all authentic/original rotors on Speedmaster 125/cal. 1041 movements would have no serial number on the rotor.
