Solid Gold 176.007 BA Coming Up For Auction

Posted by

I’ve written before about the rarity of 18k gold Seamaster 176.007s, and I consider myself lucky to own an example. Well, on March 16 you have the opportunity to own one too…

The German auction house Cortrie will be auctioning a beautiful solid gold Seamaster, with a starting bid of €8,000. The starting price and the translation of the lot description suggest they know that these aren’t exactly common, and that this one looks especially nice. Here’s Google Translate version of the description:

Approximately 38 × 42mm, 18K gold, screw-down Seamaster base, ref. 176.007, automatic movement caliber 1040, movement number 34683620, gold-colored dial with striking indexes, date, original hands, black leather strap with omega pin buckle, probably original Omega label tag, very good condition, little worn, cleaning recommended, since last revision date unknown. The 176,007 has never gone into mass production in massive 18K gold. Only a few years ago, only one specimen was known, namely the presenter to Albert Piguet on the occasion of his services to Lemania, which is now in the Omega Museum. In the meantime, it is known that there have been a few gold additions besides this watch, but they were only present watches for special customers and never officially came on the market!

That last line is interesting to me. I have now seen four examples of solid gold Seamaster 176.007s other than the Piguet watch, and this is the second time that the seller has described it as having extremely limited production for only special customers. A previous listing suggested there were between 10 and 50 made. I’m not sure but I agree that any gold 007 is rare and special, and this specific example looks nicer than the others I’ve seen.
