Serial numbers are useful for several reasons:
- They help establish a range of frequent serials, to help assess originality
- In aggregate, they determine primacy (which came first) of case references relative to one another
- The frequency that I observe unique serial numbers of a given reference establishes the proportion of overall 1040 production that reference represents
- That proportion then can be used to estimate production totals for each reference since the total number of cal. 1040 movements is known to be 82,200
- The ratio of 1040 serials observed to 1041 serials observed helps project a true production total for Speedmaster 125/1041
