Breaking: Mark III, Speedmaster 125 to be Featured in MWO Update

Posted by

Look, these watches came out 45 years ago, so I’ll take the opportunity to call something related to cal. 1040 “breaking news” when I can.

Fratello Watches posted a Speedy Tuesday article this morning with a preview of an updated version of the definitive Speedmaster tome, Moonwatch Only (MWO), which will be released to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the Speedmaster. The original MWO was a must-have for Speedmaster collectors, and I suspect that despite the hefty price plenty of collectors will be lining up for the update.

The anniversary edition will separate the myth from the facts on the NASA connection to the Speedmaster, but what I’m most excited for is the broadening of the scope to include some automatic Speedmasters (at least the Mark III and 125, anyway). The article include an image of page 517, dedicated to the Mark III.

This is big news, as this is the first authoritative source to comment on the 1040 family that I’m aware of since A Journey Through Time, which was released a decade ago. The text on page 517 reinforces the possibility that the Mark III dials were offered in other cases, but I’ll continue to be skeptical unless there is more evidence of this cited in the rest of the text. After all, not even the most authoritative sources are 100% accurate.

I’m sure I’ll have much more to say when the updated version is out. For now, make sure to check out the Fratello preview.
