Introducing Calibre 1040

Posted by

Welcome to Calibre 1040, a site dedicated to Omega’s first automatic chronograph movement, the watches that it came in and the pursuit of collecting them.

When I first became obsessed with Omega’s 1970s automatic chronos I turned to the web for research. I kept noticing gaps and asking questions like “Why is there no guide to cal. 1040 dials?” “What are the production dates and serial number ranges for these case references?” Eventually I accepted that these resources didn’t exist, and started keeping notes. At some point, I realized my notes did a good enough job of filling these gaps and decided to share them.

I have previously shared some of my notes and findings on the forums, but organizing my own notes had become cumbersome. This website, even prior to publicly launching, has helped me to structure the data in a logical way that is easy for me to access. I hope it is easy for others to navigate as well.

That’s pretty much why this site exists. I’m not selling anything – just sharing knowledge and and serving as a resource for other collectors.

I realize that this site has a narrow focus and is a niche (Omega 1040s) within a niche (vintage chronograph collectors) within a niche (watch collectors). Still, I hope it will serve as a resource and address many of the questions I get asked through the forums or Instagram, while also serving as a starting point for assessing a potential purchase or understanding a watch you already own.

My opinions are pretty firm by this point after so much time studying these pieces – but after all they are still just opinions. I welcome differing views and like to think that my opinions are subject to change when confronted with new and compelling information.

This site has some static content as well as a blog, so come check back frequently for updates. There’s still a lot to learn about these timepieces and as I learn I’ll share. My serial number project is ongoing, so look for updates there too.

So check out the site and if you have any questions or feedback, contact me using the form on the right. Follow me on twitter and Instagram to find out when new content is published.
